Lower Back Exercises: The “Superman”

If you suffer from lower back pain, the “superman” is a simple back exercise that can help strengthen the muscles of the low back.

The Set Up

  • To begin the superman, lay face down on the floor with one arm stretched out above your head and your feet straight out behind you.
  • Bend your other arm and rest your forehead on it.
  • Be sure to keep your body in a straight line.

Performing The “Superman”

  • Begin by lifting the outstretched arm and the opposite leg straight up off the floor as far as you can without twisting your body.
  • Pause briefly at the top of the movement, then slowly return your arm and leg to the floor.

Peformance Tips

  • The two pointy hip bones at the front of your body should stay in contact with the floor at all times.
  • Keep your head and neck relaxed and resting on your forehead during the exercise.
  • Once you have completed the desired number of repetitions, switch sides.

Recumbent exercise bikes are great if you have lower back pain, but still want a great cardio workout.
